Reimagining Life Through Architectural Harmony

About the
Villa Continua
The client's initial brief was closer to a carte blanche
than anything else: what they were seeking was change, a
completely fresh start to mark off a new chapter in their
life. Our design process started off by initially tackling the
exterior design of the villa itself. Indirectly, we were
heavily inspired by two completely different media; on one
hand, we knew that whatever the design outcome, it needed to
somehow relate to the vernacular nature of the previous house
whilst also respecting the surrounding urban landscape.
Seemingly opposite to this premise, we also knew that the
design would somehow need to signify this needed change as
requested by the clients. For inspiration, we therefore
latched upon their own version of modern by returning to the
Modernist principles that created many architectural
masterpieces all over Malta and Gozo.
The final outcome is an amalgamation of the two trains of
thought. The basic design language is extracted from
Corbusieran principles, whilst the sweeping curves of the
villa itself were inspired by the arches that mark off the
entrances to many of the premises within the area. In this
case, the arch is inverted and stretched along the horizontal
plane of the villa, appreciated once you look up at the first
floor as you are approaching the front door. Curves bring with
them a number of problem with regards to material choice and
detailing. The material palette was carefully selected in
order to highlight these unique design features. A selection
of woods, plastering, and 3mm flexible slate made it possible
to solve all the complex architecture details without
compromising on material finish
